A fourth measles case has been confirmed in the Northern Territory and other cases are now likely, authorities say.

Centre for Disease Control (CDC) director Vicki Krause says it's the fourth case confirmed in two weeks.

The infectious patient spent time at the Palmerston Sports Club, Palmerston shopping areas, Casuarina Square and the Smith Street Mall.

"There may be other cases in the community now or people who will develop symptoms in the coming weeks," Dr Krause said in a statement.

She said the time from exposure to the onset of symptoms is about 10 days, but can be as long as 18 days.

Symptoms include fever, cough and red eyes with a blotchy rash developing two to four days later.

Dr Krause said people with who believe they have measles symptoms should phone ahead to their health care provider to alert them of their condition so they can arrange to minimise contact with other people.

"Measles is now a rare disease but can have serious complications such as ear disease, brain swelling and pneumonia."
