NYT asks Twitter to suspend fake account

Amid controversy over an editor's sacking, the New York Times has asked Twitter to delete a fake account claiming to represent its publisher.

The New York Times has asked Twitter to suspend an new account claiming to represent the paper's publisher, Arthur Sulzberger Jr.

It comes amid controversy over the Wednesday departure of the paper's executive editor, Jill Abramson.

Abramson was reportedly fired by Sulzberger after agitating for a pay rise, having discovered that her pay cheque was considerably smaller than her predecessor's.

An account with the twitter handle "ASulzberger" appeared at about 11am AEST on Friday, amassing more than 400 followers in less than an hour, including several New York Times reporters.

"Excited to be joining @twitter to share news and updates from the @nytimes," the first of four tweets says.

"Apologies for the confusion, yes it's actually me," says a second.

But Eileen Murphy, head of communications at the Times, says the account is a fake.

"We're in touch with @twitter to have it suspended," she tweeted.
