In what may be New Zealand's ultimate sheep story, a mob of sheep owned by a police officer has stopped a car being chased by police in its tracks.
Three men and a woman have been arrested and pictures of the arrest with the disinterested sheep in the background are proving popular on social media.
The Honda car was pulled over by police near Alexandra on the South Island on Friday morning but the driver took off.
A 90-minute chase involving several police cars followed.
Road spikes were used several times but the pursued car was forced to stop only when it ran into the mob of sheep being moved on a road.
Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka told Fairfax the flock belonged to a local officer and happened to be in the right place at the right time.
There were plenty of positive comments on the Queenstown, Central Otago and Wanaka News Facebook page.
"This went past our place twice this morning and was high speed sirens blazing ... nice to see the sheep did a good job!," one person posted.
"A real daggy NZ story! Ewe don't have to be a flocking genius to work out that mob was shear baaaad news", another said.
"only in NZ", another said.
No sheep were injured.
