NZ cycling coach to face investigation

Former Australian track cyclist Anthony Peden will be investigated by Kiwi sports bosses after accusations of inappropriate behaviour.

Former Australian cyclist Anthony Peden faces accusations of inappropriate behaviour following his sudden departure as New Zealand track sprint coach.

High Performance Sport NZ has confirmed it will investigate allegations against Peden, who suddenly ended a successful five-year stint on Wednesday.

TVNZ reported several unnamed cyclists have since accused the 47-year-old of inappropriate behaviour and creating a toxic environment within the team.

The report says concerns over bullying, drinking and Peden's relationship with an athlete had been raised frequently during his tenure.

HPSNZ released a statement admitting more should have been done earlier to address cyclists' concerns.

"While I don't yet have all the facts it is clear that we could and should have done more with the information we had," he said.

"I will be commissioning an investigation so that we get to the bottom of this and learn from our mistakes."

It is understood Peden resigned after a formal complaint was laid this month.

Sydney-born Peden represented Australia as a track sprinter before switching allegiance to New Zealand 20 years ago.

He won a keirin silver medal for the Kiwis at the 1999 world championships and competed at the 2000 Olympics.

His career stalled in 2004 when he withdrew on the eve of the Athens Olympics after learning that a cortisone injection for a back injury required an official exemption.

Peden moved into a role coaching Australian MotoGP rider Casey Stoner, helping him to two world titles.

Since 2013, Peden has overseen a golden period of results for Kiwi sprint track cycling.

The men's team sprint have led the way, winning three world championships titles.
