NZ fruit ban lifted as no flies found

The fruit ban in Whangarei is over after rigorous checks found no sign of the Queensland fruit fly.

New Zealand's fruit-fly free status is intact after two weeks of trapping, fruit sampling and testing found no spread of Queensland fruit flies.

A lone Queensland fruit fly was discovered two weeks ago in Whangarei, but Ministry of Primary Industries staff found no flies in 266 traps set up in a 1.5km radius from the original find.

Restrictions on the movement of fruit and vegetables in the area were lifted on Friday night after final checks, MPI said.

The restrictions had banned the movement of fresh fruit and vegetables outside of the controlled area - although fruit and vegetables could still be brought in.

MPI's deputy director general of compliance and response Andrew Coleman said he was delighted the rigorous checks had shown no sign of the pest.

"Had this pest become established in New Zealand, it would have had serious consequences for our home gardeners, horticultural growers and the wider New Zealand economy."

Trade was not suspended during the scare.
