New Zealand speedster Adam Milne is confident of making an immediate impact when he returns from his latest injury to face Sri Lanka in the one-day international series.

Milne, 23, wants to be thrown straight back into the fray on Boxing Day when the first of five ODIs is played in Christchurch.

His last international appearances were in South Africa in August, when he was given a reduced workload as he returned from a heel injury which cut him down late in the World Cup campaign in March.

Milne missed the tour of England and is still to play a Test - not required for the recent series against Australia and Sri Lanka.

New Zealand's fastest bowler remains determined to add Tests to a promising career which has racked up 25 ODIs and 10 T20s.

Sharp domestic displays for Central Districts have reaped eight wickets in seven T20 games and match figures of 4-44 off 23 overs in a Plunket Shield fixture against Canterbury in Rangiora last week.

"The body is feeling good and I've had a decent amount of overs under my belt," he said.

"As far as the rhythm goes, it's feeling good and (the ball) is coming out nicely. I keep working on my wrist position, and keeping the seam nice and upright and hopefully it develops from there."

He is in competition with Doug Bracewell, Matt Henry and Mitchell McClenaghan for what will probably three pace bowling spots on Saturday.

First-choice seamer Trent Boult is sitting out the series while Southee will skip the first two games, both at Hagley Oval.

A more mature Milne wants to be heavily involved, including in the subsequent three T20s and three ODIs against Pakistan in January.

"You can't bowl 150km/h-plus every ball, every game. It's learning how to manage the times you bowl quick and how you train.

"If you're trying to go flat-out 24/7 every day, it's not going to work out."
