NZ PM's National could govern alone: poll

National could govern alone in New Zealand without the support of minor parties, according to a poll.

New Zealand's National party could govern alone if an election were held today, a political poll indicates.

The Fairfax-Ipsos poll, released on Saturday, puts National support down 0.8 percentage points to 49.4 per cent and Labour down 1.8 to 31.8 per cent.

On those numbers, Prime Minister John Key's National party would win 64 seats in a 123-seat parliament, enough to govern alone without the support of minor parties, and 10 seats ahead of a Labour-Greens coalition.

The Greens dropped 0.7 to 10 per cent.

NZ First rose 1.3 to 3.6 per cent, still below the 5 per cent threshold for list seats.

The Conservative Party rose 1.3 to 2 per cent and the Maori Party 0.4 to 1.1 per cent.

The Mana Party gained 0.3 per cent of the votes and ACT 0.5 per cent, while United Future did not register.

The poll results are the views of 845 voters, recorded from February 8-10. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 per cent.

A Roy Morgan poll, earlier in February, also showed National leading with 47 per cent of the votes, while a Labour-Greens coalition gained 44 per cent.
