NZ quake area residents move but not far

New Zealand census data shows Christchurch residents who moved from the city after the Canterbury earthquakes didn't go far.

The majority of people who left Christchurch following the New Zealand city's devastating earthquakes stayed in the greater Christchurch area, census data shows.

Canterbury was hit by a series of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, with a 6.3 magnitude tremor causing major property damage and 185 deaths on February 22, 2011.

Many were forced from their homes and others chose to leave, but 2013 census data shows most didn't move very far.

Two thirds of those who moved stayed in the greater Christchurch area.

Since 2006, the number of people living in Christchurch city has dropped two per cent but Selwyn grew by 32.6 per cent and the Waimakariri population increased by 16.7 per cent.

The census data shows the construction industry is the largest employer in the region, overtaking the manufacturing industry.

The proportion of Maori living in greater Christchurch increased 12.4 per cent between 2006 and 2013.

More Indian, Irish and Filipino nationals have also moved into the area.
