NZ spy agency gets its figures wrong

A New Zealand spy agency has had to correct figures in its annual report and a Greens MP says it's a serious mistake.

New Zealand spy agency Government Communications Security Bureau has had to publish a correction to its annual report - it got its figures wrong on the number of access authorisations and interception warrants in force and issued last year.

Green Party co-leader Russel Norman said it was "a serious mistake" which raised questions about the GCSB's ability to do its job.

"This mistake is not a small technical issue. It cuts to the heart of their accountability to the government and the New Zealand public," he said on Thursday.

"It also suggests the prime minister is not on top of his department - we urgently need a wide-ranging, independent inquiry into New Zealand's intelligence agencies to ensure proper oversight and to protect the privacy of New Zealanders."

The agency said in its annual report seven interception warrants were in force in the 2012/13 year and four were issued.

That's been corrected to 11 in force and five issued.

The number of access authorisations was reported as 14 in force and nine issued.

That's been corrected to 26 in force and 11 issued.
