NZ whitewash Malaysia at Fed Cup

New Zealand will play off for fifth place in their Fed Cup group after sweeping Malaysia 3-0 in Kazakhstan.

New Zealand have beaten Malaysia 3-0 in their Fed Cup women's tennis tie in Kazakhstan to set up a playoff for fifth place in Asia/Oceania group two.

Marina Erakovic and Emma Hayman won their singles matches in straight sets against lowly ranked opponents before Abigail Guthrie and Dianne Hollands combined for a similarly one-sided doubles win.

New Zealand's opponents in the fifth-place playoff in Astana on Saturday are Singapore, who beat Kyrgyzstan 2-1.

Any chances of qualifying for group one were ruined on Thursday when New Zealand lost their final pool tie 2-1 to India.
