Obama praises Pope climate change message

US President Barack Obama has praised the Pope's strong message about the need to take urgent action on climate change.

US President Barack Obama admires Pope Francis' decision to make a moral case for action against climate change.

"As Pope Francis so eloquently stated this morning, we have a profound responsibility to protect our children, and our children's children, from the damaging impacts of climate change," Obama said in a statement on Thursday.

The US must take "bold actions" to cut carbon emissions, increase clean energy, build resilience in vulnerable communities, encourage responsible management of resources, and protect the poor from the effect of climate change, Obama said.

Obama also said he would discuss the issue with Francis when he visits the US in September and that he hoped world leaders would take the Pope's words to heart ahead of climate talks in Paris in December.
