US Ambassador John Berry it was “critical and essential that the largest players step up to the plate” on climate change.

Mr Abbott has previously conceded that the issue was likely to be raised at the November meeting, but said the event would focus on economic security.

In an address to the National Press Club, Mr Berry said climate change was a “critical issue”.

“It is one that we all need to step up and respond to,” he said.

“It is an important issue. It is one that the US will raise in every international forum.”

His comments follow an announcement by US President Barack Obama that his government intends to slash emissions from its power sector by 30 per cent within two decades.
