Usman Khawaja admits he was "extremely disappointed" to be left out of Australia's one-day squad, but the gifted batsman is upbeat his international career in coloured clothes isn't over.
Khawaja was a notable absentee from the touring party that currently trails England 2-0 in a five-match series, with national selectors snubbing him despite the immense void left by banned stars Steve Smith and David Warner.
Shaun Marsh, who scored 131 in Australia's most recent loss to England, and D'Arcy Short, who made his ODI debut in the same game, were instead called into the squad.
The most recent of Khawaja's 18 ODIs came a year-and-a-half ago. It suggests the 31-year-old is unlikely to be part of the nation's World Cup defence in England next year.
"I was extremely disappointed," Khawaja told radio station RSN, when asked about being left out of Australia's ODI squad.
"I've had a lot of chats to the selectors and a couple with JL (new coach Justin Langer) about it ... and he's been really clear about everything.
"Hopefully I'll get a chance over the next year.
"I've scored a lot of runs in one-day cricket for the last five or six years, especially in domestic cricket .... my record in one-day cricket is better than my red-ball record, funnily enough. Sometimes things just don't align."
Khawaja added he believes the door is still open for him to play one-day cricket for Australia.
"I've just got to put my head down and hopefully an opportunity presents itself," he said.
"I'm not sure there's a lot more I can do, other than just keep trying to score runs."
Khawaja, who is currently with county side Glamorgan, would be an obvious replacement if a batsman suffers an injury in England.
The left-hander will depart later this winter for an Australia A tour of India.
Khawaja is no certainty to take on Pakistan during the ensuing Test series in the United Arab Emirates, having been regularly left out of Australia's XI during Tests on the subcontinent in recent years.
