O'Farrell says federal politics an option

Former NSW premier Barry O'Farrell has hinted at a path towards federal politics after his dramatic resignation in April.

Former NSW premier Barry O'Farrell is leaving the door ajar for an entry into federal politics.

The Ku-ring-gai MP stepped down as the state's leader after giving misleading evidence about a $3000 bottle of Penfolds Grange Hermitage to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in April.

Mr O'Farrell doesn't expect to recontest his seat at the next election in 2015 but hasn't ruled out a dig a federal politics.

"That's an option but I just understand there are other ways to serve the public," he told the Seven Network on Tuesday.

Mr O'Farrell said there were a number of things going through his mind, and he has also had a number of discussions.

But he was definite about being "not interested in being premier of the state again".

Mr O'Farrell resigned after insisting to the ICAC he had not received the bottle of 1959 Penfolds Grange Hermitage - a gift from Australian Water Holdings chief executive Nick Di Girolamo.

A day later, Mr O'Farrell was advised ICAC had his handwritten note of thanks to Mr Di Girolamo for the wine, prompting the premier's resignation.

Despite the spectacular fall from grace, Mr O'Farrell has found one joy.

"... if I don't have to speak to the media I don't have to."
