An eagle sparked Su Oh's charge up the leaderboard as the Australian made a strong start at the LPGA tournament in Michigan.

Oh carded a six-under-par 66 on Thursday to sit equal third and two shots behind the leaders after the opening round at Blythefield Country Club.

Kelly Shon played her last six holes in six-under for an eight-under total of 64 and a share of the lead with So Yeon Ryu.

The sixth-ranked Ryu birdied four of the five par-5s in a bogey-free round.

Oh is level with Anna Nordqvist and Celine Herbin while Sophia Popov, Caroline Masson and Lee-Anne Pace were a shot further back.

Lexi Thompson, the 2015 winner, opened with a 68.

Starting on the back nine, Oh made a subdued start to be one-over after six holes. An eagle on the par-5 16th got the 22-year-old below par and precipitated a run of six birdies over her remaining 11 holes.

Oh's only blemish was a bogey on the fifth.

Defending champion Brooke Henderson matched US Women's Open winner Ariya Jutanugarn, Michelle Wie and Lydia Ko at 69.

Annie Park, the LPGA Classic winner last week in New Jersey, had a 76.
