Oliver has again topped the most popular name for the state's newborn boys while Charlotte has returned to the top spot for girls.

Royal names appear to be a popular choice for NSW parents naming their offspring with William and Henry both in the top 10, according to the state government on Sunday.

Henry is the biggest mover on the 2017 list, moving from 18th in 2016 to fifth place.

"With a Royal wedding on the way, maybe Meghan's mark'll be made this year," Attorney General Mark Speakman said in a statement.

The list, which is not yet complete, also provides an insight into NSW communities said Mr Speakman.

"While western influences are prevalent, we are also seeing names that reflect our rich cultural diversity, such as Muhammad (59th), Ali (66th) and Ibrahim (98th)," Mr Speakman said.

A final list of the top 100 baby names will be released by April, as parents have 60 days to register their newborn, so not all names for 2017 births are yet registered, said Mr Speakman.

"Whether you opt for something that's significant to your heritage, trendy or unique, it's important to choose wisely as your child will likely carry their name for life," Mr Speakman said.
