Olympic silver medallist Brittany Broben has announced her premature retirement from diving, succumbing to an injury which kept her out of the 2016 Rio Games.

Broben, who won a silver medal as a 16-year-old in the platform final at the 2012 London Olympics, was forced to withdraw from the Australian team on the eve of Rio after a recurrence of a shoulder injury.

Despite the 2018 Commonwealth Games coming to her home city of the Gold Coast, Broben has been advised her shoulder injury will not recover enough for her to compete at her best.

"I will always be so proud of the fact that I am an Olympic silver medallist, and while I did not quite get to Rio, being selected in the team made me feel like a dual Olympian," Broben said.

"After the challenges I had had since 2013, just getting to a place where I was diving well enough to be selected for Rio, was something I will always be proud of.

"But I really wanted to dive at my best in Rio, and sadly that was not ultimately possible".

Broben is considering taking on a role as a diving coach, and has also hinted she may take up another elite sport.
