The Fair Work Ombudsman's office has announced it will be auditing up to 1500 cafes, restaurants and catering businesses across the country.

The audit was prompted by complaints from foreign workers and young people of inadequate pay and working conditions.

Director of Policy for the Fair Work Ombudsman Kevin Donnellan says many foreign workers are being poorly paid because they aren't aware of their rights.

He spoke to Naomi Selvaratnam.
