Ombudsman urges reporting on underpaid visa holders

The Fair Work Ombudsman is signalling it wants to know about any suspected cases of young people and foreign workers on visas, in particular, being underpaid.

It comes as the operator of a Kings Cross coffee shop in Sydney agreed to pay compensation to a casual foreign worker she dismissed after the woman questioned her pay.

The 26 year old employee, working on a skilled graduate visa, contacted the Ombudsman, which found she was, indeed, being underpaid.

The employer is now paying compensation under an agreement called an Enforceable Undertaking, which avoids litigation.

Fair Work Ombudsman director Craig Bildstien tells Ron Sutton how the case unfolded.
