One person is dead after a two-vehicle smash in suburban Hobart as police continue to warn drivers amid snow and ice.

Boyer Road at Bridgewater, north of the city, will remain closed for several hours as police investigate the crash.

Snow continues to fall across north, west and southern parts of Tasmania on Monday.

Black ice and snow across have closed roads and schools in parts of the state's west and south.

Snow fell overnight to street level in Hobart, where the temperature dipped to 1C, while major roads in and out of the city were shut to traffic.

There are reports that beaches near Hobart are covered in snow, which is reported to have reached its lowest altitude in the southern capital in more than a decade.
