Ongoing action needed on abuse: report

There is much work to be done yet to respond to the royal commission into child sex abuse, an annual progress report by the federal government says.

The Australian government's response to a royal commission into the sexual abuse of children in the care of institutions has only just begun, according to a new report.

The sentiment has been expressed in the government's first annual progress report on its response to the inquiry's 122 recommendations.

"Of course, this is just the beginning. Ongoing action is needed," the report published on Friday states.

The commencement of the national redress scheme and creation of the national office for child safety in July are among achievements highlighted in the report.
