Online retail sales have stalled, despite a surge in shoppers buying toys and electronic games.

The latest NAB Online Retail Sales Index shows a 0.1 per cent dip in May, a significant slowdown on April's 1.6 per cent rise.

But despite the slowdown, online sales rose 9.0 per cent to $17.1 billion in the year to May.

NAB said sales increased across most retail categories in May, with toys and electronic games posting a 20.8 per cent leap.

Sales of homewares, appliances and media items maintained double-digit growth, while fashion also performed well.

Grocery, department stores and liquor sales rose at more moderate single-digit rates, NAB said.
