Opals to face Canada at world champs

Australia will face Canada in the quarter-finals of the women's world basketball championship after the north American side won an elimination playoff.

The Opals will face Canada for a place in the semi-finals of the women's world basketball championship in Turkey.

Australia's quarter-final opponents were determined when Canada defeated Czech Republic 91-71 in an elimination playoff in Ankara on Wednesday.

The sides will meet Istanbul on Friday (Saturday morning AEST) with the winner likely to face tournament favourites United States in the semis.

The second-ranked Opals sealed direct progression to the last eight by topping Group C with convincing wins over Cuba, South Korea and Belarus.

Brendan Joyce's side has impressed so far in Turkey despite losing key stars Lauren Jackson and Liz Cambage to injury prior to the tournament.

Skipper Penny Taylor has led the way with 43 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in three games.

The Opals lost to ninth-ranked Canada 62-55 when they last met in a friendly match in Istanbul in August.
