Oppn accused of fibbing about PNG deal

The federal opposition is making up claims that Papua New Guinea's government has suspended talks on resettling asylum seekers on Manus Island, Immigration Minister Tony Burke says.

Mr Burke has accused opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison of fabricating claims the PNG plan has hit a snag, saying the issues have since been resolved.

"Scott Morrison is making it up," Mr Burke told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"You can either believe Scott Morrison giving a political line from the Liberal Party or you can believe the prime minister of Papua New Guinea, the foreign minister of Papua New Guinea and the chief migration officer of Papua New Guinea."

Mr Morrison on Saturday said a letter from PNG officials sent to the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship showed the Labor government's plan has not been delivered.

Under Labor's plan, asylum seekers who arrive by boat and are found to be legitimate refugees after processing on Manus Island would be resettled in PNG.

But Mr Burke said the letter was over a week old and the PNG's prime minister has since issued a statement saying "everything was agreed to, being implemented and sorted".

"I find it odd that the opposition today even though all of that's public ... he's still put out a statement today stating there's a problem," Mr Burke said.

"There is not."

Mr Morrison stood by his original comments and said Mr Burke should "stop making wild allegations".

"Minister Burke simply can't put on the table a detailed resettlement arrangement with Papua New Guinea and that's the simple fact of the matter," Mr Morrison told reporters.

"He's claiming that everyone will be resettled in Papua New Guinea, but there is absolutely no guidelines, there's no agreement as to how that's to be done and that remains the case today.

"This government has gone to the Australian people claiming to have an arrangement that just simply doesn't exist."
