Opposition strong for Vic youth jail plans

Thousands of angry locals are expected to rally over the state government's plans to build a 244-bed youth detention centre in Melbourne's west.

A maximum security youth prison in Melbourne's west is still scheduled to be built despite continued local opposition.

Thousands of angry locals are expected to rally early next week over the state government's plans to build a 244-bed youth detention centre in Werribee.

Wyndam City Council representatives met with Youth Minsiter Jenny Mikakos on Friday to relay the community's strong opposition against the centre.

"The Minister listened to... concerns, however she indicated that an exhaustive process had been undertaken in determining that Werribee South was the best site for the Youth Detention Centre," the council's chief executive Kelly Grigsby said.

"Whilst the minister is still of this view, she opened the door for further discussions with council."

The council on Tuesday voted to formally oppose the construction of the centre, saying it would severely impact the "image and amenity" of the area.

They say they were also never consulted on the plans.

Earlier this week local member and treasurer, Tim Pallas said the government would ensure the prison construction will incorporate community feedback and will create "opportunities for new transport and community infrastructure".

A public meeting in Werribee next Monday has been shifted to a bigger location thanks to high expected crowd numbers.

Permits to close local roads for the event have been issued, and up to 20 tractors plastered with protest banners will be set up.

Minister Mikakos has been contacted for comment.
