Opposition 'trying to cause division': Lundy

The federal government is accusing the Opposition of misinterpreting comments on the 457 visa system to try and sow division in Australian society.

The federal government is accusing the Opposition of deliberately misinterpreting Prime Minister Julia Gillard's comments on the 457 visa system to try and sow division in Australian society.

It comes after the government announced it would tighten conditions for the temporary worker immigration stream to give domestic workers a greater chance of filling job vacancies.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott says Ms Gillard is demonising foreign workers, and creating a division between Australians and foreigners.

But Multicultural Affairs Minister Kate Lundy has told Kristina Kukolja the decision is designed to create more work opportunities for Australians, including members of migrant communities.
