Optus has announced it is cutting 400 jobs, in addition to the 200 positions to be lost from its phasing out of the Virgin Mobile brand.

A week after announcing it would close its Virgin Mobile brand, cutting 200 jobs and closing 36 stores in the process, Optus on Tuesday said the latest cuts will remove duplication and lower costs.

The telco said the job cuts are part of a "step-change to the way we work" to position the business to thrive "in our increasingly competitive and disruptive market".

Following the latest cuts Optus will have 8,126 employees in its Australian workforce.

In a statement an Optus spokesperson said the company would be discussing redeployment opportunities with some affected employees.
