Origin streaker runs into legal trouble

The man who interrupted the State of Origin decider by streaking onto the field is set to face court and could be charged with trespassing.

Origin streaker to face court next month

The streaker who disrupted the dying stages of Origin III faces a lifetime ban from the venue.

The man who interrupted the State of Origin decider was already wearing a lifetime ban from all rugby league games when he streaked naked onto the field.

Wati Holmwood, 33, nearly made the length of ANZ Stadium at Wednesday night's Origin decider before a misstep gave security the chance to tackle him just shy of the try line.

His dash has earned him a second lifetime ban from attending all NRL games.

The first came in 2011 after he interrupted play during a Wests Tigers finals meeting with the Warriors.

The thickset streaker will face court next month over the incident, where he could face trespass charges for breaching his prior ban.

With two minutes left in the high-stakes Origin decider, Holmwood's nude run robbed Queensland of a try as they led 12-10 before handing the Maroons another set of six tackles - and forever wedding their eight straight winning streak to inevitable puns.

Holmwood's uncle Philip Holmwood has since leapt to his unemployed nephew's defence, saying he is a "good boy".

"He's a quiet boy, he just keeps it to himself," he told Southern Cross Radio.

"He just does things because he wants to do them."

Chief Superintendent Peter Gillam dubbed the display "idiotic and senseless".

"No one wants to see a grown man running around naked at a footy match and this man can expect to not only feel the wrath of the crowd but also a magistrate," Supt Gillam said.

He will appear in Burwood Local Court on August 6.

But it's not all stark news for Holmwood.

Queensland fullback Billy Slater joked the impressive dash could just about win him a legitimate place on the field.

"He must have some pace, the big fellow, he's done well, hasn't he?" Slater said.

"Is he a Queenslander?"
