Wade Ormsby's opening round of 64 at the 2017 BMW International has stunned many, none more so than the Adelaide golfer himself.

Ormsby's brilliant eight-under total leaves him alone on top of the leaderboard, with defending US Masters champion Sergio Garcia among those forced to play catch-up.

The Australian is one ahead of Belgian Thomas Detry and two in front of Garcia, Joost Luiten and Thorbjorn Olesen.

Ormsby, who came to the tournament aiming to shoot a low score, told the tour's website he didn't expect to perform so well.

"I had to reassess after about five or six holes because I had it going. It's just nice to start the tournament well and get off on the right foot," said Ormsby, who played his first full season on the European Tour in 2004.

After arriving at the Eichenried course on the back of three missed cuts, Ormsby reeled off six birdies in his opening nine holes and then solidified his position with another two on the way back.

The 37-year-old holed five birdies between the 11th and the 16th before settling for birdies at the sixth and ninth, narrowly missing out on eagles on both occasions.

"A bit steadier on the back but very happy," he said.

"I guess the back nine is probably a little a bit trickier than the front, so I thought I could kind of press on from there but the first three holes 'round the front you've got to keep it going, and I hit some good shots there."

Garcia opened the event, his first in Europe since his Masters win, by shooting a bogey-free six-under 66.

The world No.14 said he felt as though he played "quite well, not spectacular but very consistent".

Detry had a bogey on the first hole but recovered with six birdies and an eagle.

Defending champion Henrik Stenson (67) was among 12 players tied for sixth.
