Oscars host Ellen reveals pre-show rituals

A shower, a spritz of scent and some push-ups will all be part of the warm-up routine for Ellen DeGeneres, who will be hosting the Oscars this Sunday.

Ellen DeGeneres will prepare for the Oscars with a shower, sit-ups and a good stretch.

The beloved comedienne is hosting the 86th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday.

And she admits she follows a few rituals to get her blood flowing so she can put on a good show.

"I like to shower. I like to shower first and comb my hair," she deadpanned to E! News.

"I like to smell good. I'll put something that smells good on. My breath, I like to do a mint of some sort. And I'll do a couple of sit-ups and push-ups. That's what I do. And I stretch."

Behind the scenes, DeGeneres's Australian wife Portia de Rossi will be cheering her on.

"She gets nervous for me," the funnywoman confessed.

DeGeneres also laughed that audiences can expect more than the usual amount of costume changes.

She's apparently planning to step her style game up to the max after getting offers to wear several designers

"I'm going to change every other sentence. I have so many things to wear!" she joked.

In a moment of seriousness, she said viewers can expect to see her in designs by Hedi Slimane of St Laurent. She's a big fan of the French fashion designer's work.

"He's made some gorgeous, beautiful suits," she said. "And I'm very honoured and flattered that he wanted to put clothes on me. So I'll be changing a few times."

She has also been gearing up for Hollywood's biggest night by releasing a series of promotional videos.

In a clip released late January, the star mocked how frequently actors are cut off by music in the middle of their acceptance speeches.

DeGeneres previously received an Emmy nomination for hosting the awards show back in 2007.

She follows in the footsteps of legendary Academy Award presenters including Billy Crystal, Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

Oscar executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron recently said they were "thrilled" to have her on board.

"As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together, and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars," they said in a joint statement.

"There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere, and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are."

* The 86th Academy Awards ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday March 2. The event will be broadcast live in Australia on the Nine Network from 12.30pm (AEDT) on Monday.
