Jelena Ostapenko has dispatched Karolina Pliskova 6-3 6-1 at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Thursday.

It doesn't make any difference to the final Red Group results however, after the French Open champion lost her first two matches.

Pliskova advances to the semi-finals in spite of the loss.

"Today I really had nothing to lose because it was my last match here and I just tried to enjoy every moment," Ostapenko said.

There was very little between the pair early on, as they matched each other in a tight first set.

But in the eighth game of the set, Ostapenko forced a crucial service break and she was able to consolidate it to take the set.

The second set was a lot more open, with Ostapenko rolling through Pliskova.

It was the Latvian's best performance at what has otherwise been a forgettable tournament for her in Singapore.

In the afternoon's earlier doubles match, Hungary's Timea Babos and Andrea Hlavackova from the Czech Republic beat Andreja Klepac from Slovenia and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 6-3 6-4.

The Thursday evening session opens with a match between Garbine Muguruza and Venus Williams, which will determine the second semi-finalist from the White Group.

That will be followed by a doubles match between Martina Hingis and Yung-Jan Chan against Kvete Peschke and Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
