Snooker star Ronnie O'Sullivan surged into the UK Championship quarter-finals in typically dominant fashion as his superb 147 break sealed a 6-0 thrashing of Matthew Selt on Thursday.

The Englishman's fourth round maximum at York's Barbican Centre was the 109th in snooker history and the 13th of his career.

The 38-year-old, who had a scare when the final blue wobbled in the jaws of the middle pocket before dropping, is set to earn $US44,000 ($A48,000) for the break, which is the first of the tournament.

The achievement was even more remarkable as the five-time world champion is playing on a broken left ankle, sustained while out running in Essex last week.

O'Sullivan will play Anthony McGill for a place in the semi-finals as he continues his bid for a fifth UK title.

Earlier on Thursday, Hong Kong's Marco Fu sealed his place in the last eight with a dramatic 6-5 win over Shaun Murphy.
