"My staff took bets on this," outgoing government minister Michael Keenan said as he teared up during his valedictory speech.

The minister for human services and digital transformation didn't stumble as he proudly mentioned his work across multiple portfolios, but was overcome with emotion when it came to thanking his parents and family.

The West Australian fought back tears as he thanked his parents for supporting him.

"Mum remains particularly outraged when anyone has dared to criticise me in the press," he told the lower house on Wednesday.

"Thank God she's not on Twitter."

And it's because of family Mr Keenan is stepping away from politics, after becoming a father recently for the fourth time.

"Georgina has been long-suffering and has basically raised our kids as a single mum," he said.

"And I think it's fair to say her patience with this job is well and truly expired."

Mr Keenan has been the member for the WA seat of Stirling since 2004, which he describes as an immense privilege.

"It's been the greatest honour of my life to represent my part of Perth in a community and city that I love," he said.

The MP was first appointed to the frontbench in 2013 as the minister for justice, which he held until the end of 2017.

He proudly listed his work toughening up law enforcement, including the unexplained wealth regime to seize criminal assets, a crackdown on child sex tourism and the national firearms amnesty.

Mr Keenan also thanked Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and Minister for Defence Industry Steve Ciobo for their friendship during his parliamentary career.
