Overdue boat off Port Douglas returns safe

An overdue vessel carrying three men off the far north Queensland coast has returned to shore safely following an overnight search operation.

A boat carrying three men that sparked an overnight search operation off Port Douglas in far north Queensland has returned to shore.

The 4.6m vessel left the Rocky Point boat ramp in Wonga about 8am on Boxing Day, but failed to return.

A rescue helicopter spent the night searching for the vessel, before it eventually returned to the ramp around 6am on Saturday.

Police say the boat and all three men on board - aged 24, 43 and 52 - spent the night at Low Isles to avoid bad weather.

The trio are safe and well.
