On a day when England capitulated in the field, paceman Craig Overton bowled with a cracked rib.

The tourists looked devoid of answers on day three of third Ashes Test when centurions Steve Smith and Mitch Marsh helped Australia take control of the contest.

Overton's resolve could not be questioned.

The paceman has been England's best paceman in the WACA clash, dismissing both openers on day two.

Overton was struck on the ribs by a Pat Cummins bouncer at Adelaide Oval and aggravated the injury by attempting to hold on to what would have been a sensational return catch on Friday.

He continued to bowl in great discomfort until he finally trudged off, having delivered 10 overs on day two.

Overton was sent for a scan on Saturday morning. It revealed a hairline fracture but he was determined to bowl through the pain.

The right-armer rolled his arm in the nets then was given permission to bowl in the match.

Overton was lively despite his injury, extracting more bounce out of the deck than Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson.

He troubled Smith more than any other bowler, striking him on the gloves and chin with a rearing delivery on day two.

He backed it up on Saturday with a ball on an awkward length that struck Smith high on the arm.
