The Green Bay Packers are a step closer to the Super Bowl after beating the Dallas Cowboys 34-31 in the dying moments of the NFL playoff in Texas.

Aaron Rodgers, the NFL's hottest quarterback, put Green Bay in position to advance to the NFC Championship and kicker Mason Crosby did the rest to launch a Packers' celebration at AT&T Stadium.

The win pits the Packers against Atlanta Falcons next Sunday, with a spot in the Super Bowl at stake.

"Unbelievable effort. What a game, what a game," Rogers told Fox Sports.

The Cowboys tied the game with 44 seconds left but on the third down with 12 seconds remaining Rodgers proved too much.

Scrambling to his left, he rifled a 35-yard completion to tight end Jared Cook, who dragged his toes in bounds at the 33-yard line with three seconds on the clock.

Crosby followed with a game-winner just inside the left upright, after his first attempt right down the middle was waived off when the Cowboys called a timeout just before the snap.

"Jared just kept on coming and I tried to put it in a good spot and he made a hell of a catch. And then Mason, Mason kicked twice. Unbelievable," Rodgers said.

"It's a different energy with this team, the guys are very hungry, there's a stronger belief."

Rodgers threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns as the Packers (12-6) won their eighth straight.

The Cowboys' season ends after earning the No.1 seed in the NFC and an off week for the first round of the playoffs.

Several of the Dallas stars helped the Cowboys rally twice, first from 18 points down and again after the Packers went up 31-28 with 1:33 left on a 56-yard field goal by Crosby.

But Rodgers had the ball last to set up Crosby for the winning field goal.

The Packers will visit Atlanta in Rodgers' third NFC title game for a place in the Super Bowl.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy applauded the sheer grit shown by his team.

"I can't say enough about my football team's resiliency," McCarthy said.
