The stage was set for a run-fest amid perfect batting conditions at the tiny Hurstville Oval and South Australia took full toll, hammering Cricket Australia XI's young bowling attack on a day of records.
South Australia ultimately earned a bonus-point win with a 102-run winning margin, helping keep their one-day cup hopes alive.
But it is the record-breaking landmarks that will live longest in the memory.
South Australia posted 7-420 off their 50 overs, surpassing Queensland's tally of 4-405 set in 2004 as the competition record.
South Australia pair Callum Ferguson and Jake Weatherald both hit career-best scores amid a seemingly endless parade of sixes - there were 16 in total during the Redbacks' innings.
Ferguson scored 154 from just 113 balls, while Weatherald was equally dominant in his knock of 141 from 104.
The pair combined for a 225-run partnership - a new SA high for the second wicket and the state's third-highest ever.
"We didn't have the record in the back of our minds, but it is certainly pleasing," Ferguson said.
"Whenever you make a start you want to make a big score, and we have a real emphasis on that in the Redbacks camp, so that was really pleasing.
"The CA XI have ability, there is no doubt about it, and they even showed it with the ball at times."
However, the CA XI's misery was partly of their own doing with Ferguson and Weatherald both dropped twice.
Weatherald revealed the SA batsman targeted a short boundary on one side of what is already a compact ground.
"It is a great wicket with one small boundary so it was going to be a big scoring game for both teams," he said.
"It is a pretty good wicket, and there was a little bit of seam in it early but we were able to capitalise on some short-pitched bowling."
The CA XI used seven bowlers to try and stem the flow of runs but to no avail, although Tom O'Donnell (3-84) was on a hat-trick after claiming Ferguson and Cameron Valente in successive balls.
Despite the carnage inflicted on their bowling attack, the CA XI impressed with the bat, as they have done on several previous occasions.
They reached 100 inside 10 overs and their run-rate was on target at the midway point of the innings with just three wickets down.
However, the CA XI lost their last four wickets for 15 runs and they were dismissed for 318 off 42 overs.
Jake Carder top-scored with 93 and Josh Inglis and Ryan Gibson batted aggressively at the top of the order as both scored 68 from 38 and 46 balls respectively.
