Pair survive back-to-back sinkings off Qld

Two people have been pulled from the water after their boat and then their escape dinghy sank in quick succession off far north Queensland.

Two unlucky boaties who abandoned their sinking boat have been plucked from the sea after the dinghy they fled in also sank off Cairns.

The pair have told police their 18-metre vessel hit something and began to go under about midday on Sunday, forcing them into the dinghy.

They headed for nearby Euston reef but their troubles were far from over after the smaller craft also began taking on water.

Police say it was extremely lucky that a commercial dive boat was in the area and picked up the signal from their emergency beacon.

By the time help arrived, the boaties were in the water and their dinghy was entirely submerged.

They escaped their ordeal without injury, and have cracking survival story to tell.
