The Palmer United Party will run a candidate in the by-election for the federal seat of Canning following the death of Western Australian MP Don Randall.

Leader Clive Palmer told ABC TV on Sunday he's confident his party has strong support in the west based on past results in two Senate elections.

He questioned whether WA constituents would support a proposal to lift the GST from 10 to 15 per cent if most of the increase was going to Sydney and Melbourne.
