Palmer quits Mineralogy, blames media

Clive Palmer's office says the mining magnate's decision to quit as director of Mineralogy was purely an effort to comply with the media's advice.

Clive Palmer's decision to step down as director of one of his main companies was motivated by nothing but the media, his office says.

It has been revealed Mr Palmer, the mining billionaire turned member of parliament, quit the board of Mineralogy last month.

Media reports have suggested the move, and Mr Palmer's similar action on other boards, is an attempt to distance himself from allegations by Chinese state-owned CITIC Pacific about wrongful spending of funds.

But a spokesman for Mr Palmer said on Friday suggestions the move was motivated by allegations in China were "ridiculous".

He said the media had told Mr Palmer to step down - and he had.

"He's just doing what the press said he should do," the spokesman told AAP.

"It's hardly a story. He said he was going to do it. It would be a story if he didn't do it."

Mr Palmer's Mineralogy remains locked in bitter legal disputes with CITIC Pacific over iron ore and port issues in WA's Pilbara region.
