Palmer tight-lipped on carbon tax repeal

Clive Palmer says it is premature for his Palmer United Party to adopt a stance on the government's carbon tax repeal bill.

The Palmer United Party will reserve judgment on coalition government legislation to repeal the carbon tax to avoid undermining the current Senate.

The minor party looks set to control four of the five crossbench votes the government needs for Senate approval after July 1, 2014.

For the time being, it won't say whether it supports the government move.

"We have no positions on anything. We are completely neutral until we see the bills," party founder Clive Palmer told reporters in Brisbane on Wednesday.

"We don't want to undermine the current Senate that's got to consider it."

It is important that people see electricity prices go down if the tax is abolished, Mr Palmer said.

He wants guarantees written into legislation.

Mr Palmer refused to be drawn further into the debate, insisting it was premature for his party to take a stance on an issue it might not have to consider in parliament.

"The carbon tax could go through in the first parliament, the Labor party might vote with it, it might not even be an issue for us," he said.

Mr Palmer reiterated his earlier comments that repeal of the carbon tax should apply retrospectively to its introduction on July 1, 2012.

The government plans to have the repeal take effect from July 1, 2014.
