Pampling, Percy chase but Day falters

After missing the cut at the US Open, world No 4 Jason Day is in danger of missing the weekend at the PGA's Traveler's Championship in Cromwell.

Australia's Rod Pampling and Cameron Percy are four shots off the pace after the opening round of the Travelers Championship, but it was another disappointing display from Jason Day.

The world No.4 struggled to a two-over-par 72 at the Cromwell course in Connecticut, signing for three birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-four sixth.

The Queenslander is tied 110th and in danger of missing his second successive cut, following his early exit from the US Open last week.

With Day self-destructing, Pampling and Percy took up the Australian charge with their three-under-par 67s elevating them to joint 19th position.

Greg Chalmers and Marc Leishman both finished one under par, but Stuart Appleby, Ryan Ruffels (one over), Geoff Ogilvy (three over) , Brett Coletta (four over) and Brett Drewitt (five over), face a struggle to make the weekend.

Jordan Spieth, with a sizzling seven-under-par 63 that included eight birdies and a bogey, leads by one from Americans Johnson Wagner and Brett Stegmaier.

Stegmaier had seven birdies in a nine-hole stretch in the middle of the round and closed with a bogey on the ninth.

World No.3 Rory McIlroy, also playing the event for the first time, had a 67. Like Day, he missed the cut at the US Open.
