SYDNEY, Aug 31 AAP - Penrith winger David Simmons will retire after this week's final NRL game of the regular season against Newcastle.
The 30-year-old said he had made the decision early on in the season but wanted to see whether his body could withstand another season in the NRL.
However the former Cronulla flyer said he was content with his decision.
"I'm happy to finish now. It just seems like the right time," he said in a statement.
"It's nothing really to do with injury, or the club not wanting me. I just feel as though it's the right time to finish."
Saturday night's match against the Knights also doubles as Simmons' 200th match of his career.
"You never set out to get these milestones," he said.
"You want to play one game, you want to play two. So to get close to 200 now is just amazing.
"If I can get to 200, it'll be a good way to cap it off."
Simmons departs rugby league after scoring 103 tries over 14 seasons in the NRL, having debuted with Cronulla in 2003.
He played 112 games and scored 54 tries in seven years at the Sharks before moving to Penrith, where he crossed the line 49 times in 87 games.
The De La Salle junior represented City Origin in 2006 and was the league's equal top tryscorer in the 2013 season.
