Penrith have been struck a blow with centre Dean Whare to miss the next four NRL rounds with a broken jaw.

Whare suffered the injury in a head clash during Sunday's heavy loss to South Sydney.

Immediately after the game coach Anthony Griffin said he didn't believe the problem was structural, but scans have since revealed a fracture.

The 27-year-old will not require surgery and is expected to be back for their round 22 clash against Wests Tigers.

The Panthers sit two wins outside the top eight after their flogging to the Rabbitohs and have to win six of their final nine games to make the finals.
