Panthers hope miracle win sparks title bid

Penrith are banking on last week's historic comeback win over the Warriors to kick-start their NRL season.

Penrith players are hoping last week's miraculous comeback over the Warriors will kick-start their season following a miserable start to their NRL campaign.

The Panthers were staring down the barrel of a sixth straight loss when they trailed 28-6 at half-time in last Saturday's clash at Pepper Stadium.

However, a blistering second-half display saw the pre-season title favourites chalk up 30 unanswered points to run out 36-28 winners - the second biggest comeback in the club's history.

"To come back the way we did, we take out a lot of belief and inspiration," said representative forward Trent Merrin.

"It was great for the fans to see us come home like that."

"We were struggling, but we always know that that style of footy's there. It's just that we let ourselves down the last few weeks in crucial areas of the game.

"It gives us a lot of belief, that win on the weekend. We know what we're capable of doing. We'll take a lot of confidence out of that and take it into Newcastle this week."

Teammate James Tamou admitted the victory was a relief, given the team was looking at having to win 10 of their final 15 matches to have any hope of making the finals.

They now get a chance to gather momentum, beginning with a road trip against Newcastle on Saturday, followed by a bye, then meetings with Canterbury and Canberra.

"The monkey's off the back a bit and we're not looking behind our backs now. That's just the start of it. I feel we can try and get a few on the trot now," Tamou said.

The Panthers have lost James Fisher-Harris for at least a week after the second-rower picked up a hamstring injury, with Corey Harawira-Naera named to start and Viliam Kikau in the 17.

Peter Wallace and Isaah Yeo were rested from Tuesday's training run after picking up niggles against the Warriors but are not in danger of missing the clash.
