Penrith's injury curse has continued with halfback Peter Wallace ruled out for the rest of the NRL season with a knee injury.

Wallace will have surgery on his right knee for the third time in two seasons after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's loss to Canberra.

The Panthers halfback retore a graft which was put in when he had surgery on the same knee earlier this year.

He missed six weeks due to the same problem earlier in the year.

His loss has been compounded by news centre Dean Whare will miss four to six weeks with a broken thumb and will have surgery later in the week.

The Panthers' recovery ward is now overflowing with Matt Moylan (ankle), Brent Kite (broken leg), Jamal Idris (knee), Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (collapsed lung) all recuperating from serious injuries.

Meanwhile, Cronulla back-rower Luke Lewis will miss two to three weeks due to a knee injury.

Lewis limped off in the second half of the side's win over Canterbury at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday.

The match was costly for both sides with Bulldogs five-eighth Josh Reynolds suffering a knee injury which will keep him out for four to six weeks while forward Frank Pritchard will undergo further scans on a rib problem and could miss a month.
