Paper to pay Madrid 300K euros in damages

French newspaper Le Monde has been ordered to pay Spanish soccer giants Real Madrid $462,000 in damages for linking them to a notorious doping doctor.

Spain's supreme court has ordered French newspaper Le Monde to pay soccer powerhouse Real Madrid 300,000 euros ($A462,000) in damages for linking the club to a notorious doping doctor.

The court also ordered Le Monde to pay Barcelona 15,000 euros ($A23,000) for associating them with Eufemiano Fuentes.

Le Monde wrote in December 2006 that it had seen handwritten notes by Fuentes over "preparation plans" for Madrid and Barcelona.

Fuentes was previously found guilty of endangering public health and given a suspended jail sentence in the Puerto cycling case.

Le Monde had appealed to the supreme court after provincial courts ruled in favour of the Spanish giants.

Barcelona had sued for the same amount as Madrid but received less due to a technical oversight in their complaint.
