Parental leave is 'recalibrated': Billson

Small Business Minister Bruce Billson says it appears the government's mandate on its full-wage paid parental leave policy counted for nothing.

The Abbott government had to "recalibrate" its paid parental leave policy since it couldn't get support for the generous scheme.

Although it took the policy to two elections, mandates now appeared not to matter, Small Business Minister Bruce Billson said on Sunday.

"We wanted to go further but we couldn't deliver that. We've had to recalibrate," he told ABC TV when questioned about the new watered-down policy.

Independent Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie supports ending double dipping in the commonwealth PPL, but says it should be capped at $25,000 for six months rather than around $11,500 for 18 weeks at present.

"Taxpayers are prepared to put their money in to help those who are less fortunate," she told Sky News.

"But if you are not less fortunate, why are we helping you?" she asked.
