Parkes Elvis Festival kicks off in NSW

The annual Parkes Elvis Festival starts on Wednesday with 18,000 fans and impersonators due to land in the NSW town.

The NSW town of Parkes is bracing itself for an influx of blue suede shoes, jumpsuits and rhinestones as the 2015 Elvis festival kicks off.

The festival starts on Wednesday and is preparing for one of its biggest years as it celebrates the King's 80th birthday on Thursday.

The town is set to almost triple in size as about 18,000 people are expected to turn up for the event.

It includes a busking competition, a Miss Priscilla contest and, for the 10th year running, the renewal of marriage vows in front of an Elvis-impersonating celebrant.

There's also an Elvis edible art contest and a poets breakfast, where people will read out their odes to the King.

The festival is on January 7-11.
