An office building in Sydney's west has been evacuated following a fire in electrical equipment.

Around 400 people have been evacuated from a high-rise office building in Sydney's west after a fire caused by faulty electrical equipment.

A NSW Fire & Rescue spokesman said the building on Smith Street in Parramatta was evacuated on Monday morning after staff noticed smoke spreading through the building.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the building and contained the fire after locating it in electrical equipment on the seventh floor, he said.
